What Is a Multi-Function Valve?
Release time:  2025-04-10

In the field of industrial automation and fluid control, multi-function valves are gradually replacing traditional single-function valves as the core component of modern pipeline systems, thanks to their innovative “one valve for multiple purposes” design. These valves integrate functions such as flow regulation, pressure control, medium switching, and safety protection, optimizing equipment layout, reducing procurement costs, and enhancing system operational efficiency and reliability.

The multi-function valve can achieve more functions within a single valve body. Firstly, it can serve as a silent check valve. Additionally, it can function as a shut-off valve. Beyond these roles, it also enables balance valve functionality. The valve is further equipped with two test ports reserved for diagnostic purposes.

Working principle

Due to its complex internal structure and precise design, when the system operates normally, the medium at the inlet end pushes the large valve disc upward. Simultaneously, the medium flows through the flow-regulating small valve into the central chamber, enabling rapid valve opening. At this stage, fluid can smoothly pass through the valve into the system pipeline.

When the system stops operating, the medium at the outlet end enters the upper chamber through the regulating valve, causing the driving mechanism to descend and drive both large and small valve discs downward. This action enables rapid or gradual valve closure to prevent backflow. This automatic opening/closing process not only achieves bidirectional fluid control within the pipeline but also reduces energy consumption and extends equipment lifespan to a certain degree.

Additionally, the multi-function valve incorporates a built-in pressure relief device or pressure-limiting feature that automatically releases excess pressure during system overpressure conditions, protecting pipelines and equipment from damage. This intelligent design ensures stable performance even in complex and variable operating conditions.

Featuring a unique V-shaped valve seat, the valve demonstrates exceptional adjustability. Owing to its design characteristics, the valve can be maintained in the pipeline without requiring special tools or removal from the piping system.

The multi-function valve integrates the functions of butterfly valve, balance valve, silent check valve and measuring valve. The use of the multi-functional valve can shorten installation time, reduce installation space, and save installation cost (including hardware cost, labor cost, etc.).

Application

Urban Public Facilities
Water Supply Networks: Dynamically balance water pressure, eliminate “water hammer effect” and reduce pipe rupture risks; energy-saving low-pressure mode during nighttime operation.
Wastewater Treatment: Coordinate flow switching between aeration tanks and sedimentation tanks to optimize treatment efficiency; precise chemical dosing reduces operational costs.
Centralized Heating: Adjust water flow and temperature at heat stations on demand, enabling time- and zone-based heating with energy savings of 15%–30%.
Building and HVAC Systems
Smart Buildings:
HVAC Chilled/Hot Water Circulation: Dynamically adjust flow based on room temperature to reduce fan energy consumption; zone-controlled cooling ensures “on-demand supply”. Fire Sprinkler Systems: Rapidly respond to fire alarms with synchronized valve activation, maintaining emergency water pressure.
Regional Energy Stations: Integrate ground-source heat pumps and solar thermal systems, enabling multi-energy synergy via valve switching.
New Energy and Environmental Protection
PV/Lithium Battery Production: Control precise supply of etching solutions and electrolytes to minimize waste; acid/alkali-resistant valves handle highly corrosive media.
Hydrogen Storage/Transport: Explosion-proof design ensures safe hydrogen delivery with leakage rates below 0.001%.

Installation

Pre-installation Preparation:
Verify valve model, nominal diameter, and pressure rating compatibility with pipeline specifications.
Clean welding slag and debris inside the pipeline to avoid damaging sealing surfaces.
Installation Orientation:
Align the valve according to the medium flow direction arrow marked on the valve body to prevent reverse installation.
Reserve sufficient operational space for future maintenance or actuator adjustments.
Connection Methods:
Flanged Connection: Ensure parallel alignment of flange faces and symmetrical, uniform tightening of bolts.
Threaded Connection: Apply PTFE tape or sealant to prevent leaks; avoid overtightening to prevent valve body deformation.
Electrical Wiring: Connect the actuator’s power and signal cables to the control cabinet as per the manual, with waterproof and dustproof treatment.
Commissioning & Acceptance:
Perform a no-load test to confirm smooth opening/closing operation.
Gradually pressurize the system to the rated value and verify leak-free performance and control response compliance.
