What Does A Motorized Control Valve Do?
Release time:  2025-05-09

A motorized control valve is an automatic control valve driven by an electric actuator to open or close, enabling remote control of fluid on/off, flow regulation, and pressure adjustment, thereby enhancing the intelligence level of system operations. Compared to traditional manual or pneumatic valves, motorized control valves offer significant advantages such as high control precision, fast response speed, and strong integration. Whether in HVAC systems, petrochemical industries, power generation, or food and pharmaceutical sectors, motorized control valves play an essential role.

Working principle

An motorized control valve consists of two main components: an electric actuator and a valve body. Its core workflow is as follows:

Receiving Control Signals
A PLC, DCS, or building management system (BMS) sends target opening (or open/close commands) to the actuator’s control module via analog signals or a digital bus.
Driving Motor & Gear Reduction
The actuator’s internal DC or AC motor starts rotating, converting high-speed, low-torque motor rotation into low-speed, high-torque output through reduction mechanisms like worm gears or planetary gears. This ensures smooth valve operation even in high-pressure-difference or high-shear media environments.
Valve Stem/Disc Execution
Motor rotation drives the valve stem or disc to rotate or lift, enabling the valve to transition from fully closed to partially open, or fully open. Infinitely adjustable positioning is achievable across a 0-100% travel range.
Position & Status Feedback
Modern motorized control valves typically feature potentiometers, Hall-effect sensors, or encoders to monitor valve opening in real time, feeding data back to the control system for closed-loop control. Some models also integrate sensors for temperature, pressure, or flow, enabling multi-parameter alarm linkage and protection.
Safety Protection & Self-Diagnostics
Smart motorized control valves incorporate built-in features such as limit switches, motor overcurrent/overheat protection, and battery/UPS backup power. In cases of power failure, overcurrent, overvoltage, or valve jamming due to overload, the actuator automatically cuts off output or executes preset actions (e.g., returning to a safe closed position) and triggers alarms via status signals.

Types of motorized control valves

In Terms of Drive Mechanism:
Linear stroke motorized control valves: The motor drives the valve stem in linear motion (e.g., globe valves, gate valves ). They offer high thrust, making them suitable for high-pressure differential or large-diameter applications.
Quarter-turn motorized control valves: The motor drives the valve stem to rotate 90 degrees (e.g., ball valves, butterfly valves ). They provide quick opening/closing and low flow resistance, leading to widespread use.
In Terms of Functional Characteristic:
On/off motorized control valves: Responsible solely for full opening or full closing (e.g., electric ball valves, butterfly valves), achieving flow path on/off control.
Modulating motorized control valves: Their core function is precise and continuous modulation (e.g., motorized control valves). By receiving analog signals like 4-20mA or 0-10V, they enable infinite adjustment to any valve opening position. They are essential tools for the precise control of flow, pressure, and temperature.

Installation

To ensure the long-term stable operation of motorized control valves and leverage their energy-efficient advantages, installation and maintenance are particularly crucial. The following practical guidelines are recommended:

Pre-Installation Preparation
Model-application compatibility check: Verify that valve specifications (port size, medium temperature, pressure rating, power supply voltage such as AC 220 V, AC 380 V, or DC 24 V) match on-site requirements.
Inspection for integrity: Ensure all components (valve body, actuator, mounting accessories, dust cover, manuals) in the packaging are intact and free from shipping damage.
Pipeline debris removal: After welding, flushing, or dust removal, confirm pipelines are clear of slag, metal shavings, or other contaminants to prevent damage to the valve core sealing surface.
Installation Considerations
Correct flow direction: Install according to the flow direction arrow marked on most valve bodies.
Actuator orientation: Position the actuator vertically upward where possible for heat dissipation and future maintenance. If vertical mounting is impractical, ensure secure installation without water accumulation.
Pipe support & stress relief: Avoid rigid connections to heavy/long pipelines; use brackets or supports to distribute weight and thermal stress.
Electrical wiring compliance: Use flexible copper wires with appropriate cross-sections and circuit breakers. Secure terminal connections without looseness.
Signal cable shielding & grounding: Use twisted-pair shielded cables for analog/digital bus signals. Ground shield layers per the manual to minimize EMI.
Commissioning & Testing
Manual operation check: If equipped, switch to manual mode to verify smooth valve opening/closing without jamming.
Auto modulation test: After power/signal connection, perform a 0% → 100% → 0% travel test to validate actuator limits and limit switches.
Feedback signal calibration: Ensure feedback values at 0% and 100% positions match the control system under 4-20 mA or digital bus modes.
Leakage & seal test: Conduct pressure tests in the fully closed state to confirm zero internal/external leaks.
Routine Maintenance
Periodic cycling: Exercise valves every quarter (minimum 2-3 open/close cycles) to prevent sticking during prolonged inactivity.
External cleaning: Wipe dust/oil from actuator surfaces to maintain thermal dissipation.
Seal & stem lubrication: Inspect and replace valve stem O-rings, packing, and lubrication mechanisms annually or after 4,000 operating hours.
Fault alarm analysis: Investigate repeated overload/overcurrent alarms promptly; halt operation and contact professional after-sales service if needed.
Parameter backup (smart valves): Before firmware upgrades or actuator replacement, back up critical settings (travel limits, feedback calibration, fault logs).

Taloar motorized controls (Take stainless-steel threaded motorized control valves of UL330/350 and AF550/572 series as examples) apply to HVAC and building automation systems. Once the motorized control valves receive signals transmitted by computers or other devices, they can then adjust temperature, pressure and control system parameters such as flow rate and liquid level. The valves are mainly used to convey mediums such as cold water, hot water, and ethylene glycol solution.
