TALOAR electric butterfly valves combine compact quarter-turn valve bodies with reliable electric actuators for remote isolation and modulating control in HVAC, chilled-water, data-center cooling, water-treatment and industrial utility systems.
An electric butterfly valve, also called an electric actuated butterfly valve or motorized butterfly valve, uses an electric actuator to rotate a disc through approximately 90 degrees. The disc controls or stops flow inside the pipeline. Depending on the actuator package, the valve can provide simple open/close isolation, intermediate positioning or proportional modulation from a BMS, PLC or local control panel.
The short face-to-face dimension, relatively low weight and quarter-turn motion make automated butterfly valves especially practical for medium- and large-diameter water pipelines. They are commonly selected when a project requires remote operation, repeatable valve positioning, position feedback and integration with an automation system.
Open, close or position valves from a control room, building management system or PLC without routine manual operation.
Wafer, lug and flanged butterfly valve arrangements use less pipeline space than many linear-motion alternatives.
The compact body and low operating torque can make butterfly valves attractive for automated medium- and large-diameter water service.
Local indicators, limit switches and optional feedback signals allow operators to confirm valve status.
Choose on/off operation for isolation duty or modulating control where intermediate positioning is required.
Actuator control and feedback options support integration with project automation architecture when specified correctly.
After receiving an electrical command, the actuator motor drives a reduction gearbox. The gearbox increases available torque and turns the valve stem. When the disc is aligned with the pipeline, fluid passes through the valve. When the disc rotates across the pipeline, the resilient seat seals around the disc to stop flow.
For modulating duty, the actuator stops at intermediate positions in response to the control signal. Correct actuator sizing is essential because required torque depends on valve diameter, differential pressure, seat friction, media, frequency of operation and the engineering safety margin. The actuator should be selected from verified valve torque data rather than voltage or pipe size alone.

| Selection Factor | Information to Confirm | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal size | Pipe diameter and available installation space | Defines valve dimensions, flow area and actuator torque range |
| Pressure conditions | PN/Class rating, maximum working pressure and differential pressure | Supports safe valve and actuator sizing |
| Connection | Wafer, lug or flanged arrangement; mating flange standard | Affects installation, alignment, maintenance and isolation strategy |
| Valve materials | Body, disc, stem, seat and coating | Must match the fluid, temperature, corrosion conditions and environment |
| Power supply | Available voltage and phase, including 220V/380V where applicable | Prevents mismatch with site electrical infrastructure |
| Control duty | On/off isolation or modulating positioning | Determines actuator and control package |
| Signals | Required command, position feedback and auxiliary switches | Ensures compatibility with BMS, PLC or control panel |
| Protection | Enclosure rating, ambient temperature, indoor/outdoor location | Protects actuator reliability in the installation environment |
| Power-loss behavior | Manual override or project-specific fail-position requirement | Supports emergency operation and system safety planning |
| Compliance | Project standards, documentation and inspection requirements | Reduces specification and approval risk |

| Actuation | Best-Fit Use | Main Selection Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Electric | Remote operation, BMS/PLC integration and locations without compressed air | Voltage, control mode, operating speed, torque and enclosure protection |
| Pneumatic | Fast cycling and facilities with established instrument-air systems | Air quality, pressure, accessories and fail-action requirements |
| Manual | Occasional local operation at simpler isolation points | Accessibility and whether frequent or remote operation is required |
Routine inspection should include the actuator enclosure, cable entries, fasteners, local position indicator, feedback status, valve seat and any evidence of leakage or increased torque. Maintenance intervals should reflect the operating environment and cycling frequency.
Yes, when fitted with a suitable modulating actuator and correctly sized for the installed pressure and flow conditions. Projects requiring close control should review the installed flow characteristic and operating range.
The terms are commonly used for the same general product: a butterfly valve operated by an electric motor actuator. Specifications should still define whether the required duty is on/off or modulating.
Many actuators provide manual override. If an automatic fail-open or fail-closed response is mandatory, include it in the project specification so the correct actuator solution can be evaluated.
Use the valve manufacturer's required operating torque at the actual differential pressure and service condition, then apply an appropriate engineering safety factor. Do not select torque solely from nominal pipe size.
Provide size, quantity, pressure, medium, temperature, connection, materials, voltage, control duty, signals, enclosure requirements, standards and project location.
Wafer designs are compact, lug designs can support certain isolation and maintenance arrangements, and flanged valves provide an integrated flange connection. Selection depends on piping standards, maintenance strategy and project requirements.
